Although losing most of their contracts when they refused to move to Columbia, SC in 1862, Hoyer & Ludwig were still occasionally used by the Department of Treasury. The understanding was that their imprint, however, could not appear on any notes printed. This $1 is one of the notes printed in this manner. PMG grades the note Uncirculated 62 EPQ.
