    A unit of the CSA Army was formed and called the Holcombe Legion in honor of Lucy Pickens (nee Holcombe.) Ms. Pickens was the wife of the governor of South Carolina at this time. She designed and sewed the flag for the military unit named for her. It is claimed that she financed its equipment by the sale of some of the jewels given to her by Tsar Alexander II. Her husband, Francis Wilkinson Pickens, was ambassador to Russia from 1858-60. PCGS New 62.
