Description

    T41 $100 1862 Cr. 318A (3); Cr. UNL (7)
These ten notes spent the war near Augusta, GA, in a strong box belonging to a wealthy planter named William Nathaniel Mercier. They only saw the light of day every January 1 between 1863 and 1865 when each was duly stamped and collected accrued interest. They, and an additional 781 $100s, a $1000 Montgomery note (serial no. 91), plus a few other confederate notes, stayed in that strong box as part of the family's heritage, moving around the country with various family members, until a family gathering in New Hampshire in July, 1996 when the box was finally pried open, with the contents subsequently being sold at auction in August, 1998. Hilton purchased a bundle of 100 T41s at that sale which included this run of ten.
These notes bear consecutive serial numbers from 48306 to 48315 and are all plate letter W meaning that they were the top note of the sheet. Interestingly, the notes are split between two plate varieties; Three are Cr. 318A with a continuous inner frame line while the remaining seven are the unlisted Criswell variety with the letter "T" at the lower left corner of the vignette and an intermittent inner frame line. Here is a breakdown:
