An interesting endorsement for "M.R. Stansell Covington, Geo" is above the Tallahassee Jan. 1, 1864 interest paid to stamping. Listed in the Cartersville Courant American newspaper of February 16, 1899 is an obituary for one Matthew R. Stansell, an attorney. Stansell was born in Newton County (where Covington is located). He enlisted in the Confederate Army at Covington. He served only a few months before receiving a discharge and he was cited as a "Colonel" in the obituary.
