DescriptionManuscript Endorsement "Thos. Lanigan Maj & CS" T40 $100 1862 PF-1 Cr. 298.
Major and Commissary of Subsistence Lanigan was stationed at Fort Smith, Arkansas and was responsible for the Indian Territory. This $100 was issued on January 9, 1863. Notes issued by Lanigan are listed as R13, three to five known, on page 328 of Fricke's Field Edition 2014. This $100 with serial number 35761-Af is also closely serial numbered to the plated example on page 119 of Confederate Issuers of Train and Hoer Notes by Michael McNeil. We are unsure of the meaning of the statement of "printer's annotation" on the back of the third party label, unless the Lanigan endorsement has been mistaken for something else. PMG Very Fine 25.
