"Richd. Sykes" Endorsement

    Manuscript Endorsement Richd. Sykes Sept 14th / 63 T39 $100 1862 PF-13 Cr. 294.
The back of this note has a manuscript endorsement of "Richd. Sykes Sept 14th / 63" as well as black three line IP stamps from Jackson (1864) and Richmond (1865). Sykes is a new name just researched by Mike McNeil. As it turns out Sykes was a hospital steward, who ended the war surrendering as part of the hospital attendants and patients of the West Point Hospital, MS, of the Confederate States Army, commanded by Surgeon F.H. Evans on May 4, 1865. Current thinking is that Sykes merely endorsed this note rather than issuing it. The note itself grades Very Fine 20 per PCGS, noting a missing lower right corner and small edge splits.

    Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
