Army of Northern Virginia Paid Out T41Manuscript Endorsement "John A. Harman" T41 $100 1862 PF-10 Cr. 315A.
An exciting new discovery that is the first reported note to be issued by John A. Harman. Neither the McNeil or Fricke tomes reference Major John A. Harman. The endorsement on the back reads, "Paid Out on the 27th of February 1863 John A. Harman Maj(or) & Ch(ief) Q(uarter) M(aster) 2n Corp A(rmy) (of) N(orthern) V(irginia)." This endorsement contains the details of Harman's rank and unit plus the all-important Army of Northern Virginia abbreviation. The note is dated between the campaigns of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. A little background on Harman is that pre-war census information lists him as a butcher and a Texas Ranger. Later he would go on to serve as a captain in a Virginia militia company. Next, he was appointed a captain and Chief Quartermaster of Stonewall Jackson's command at Harpers Ferry in May 1861. He would continue as Corps Quartermaster under Generals Ewell and Early. The Net grade is for rust and stains, but they are inconsequential when it comes to this piece of American history.
