'GWC' Issued T41Manuscript Endorsement "G(eorge) W. C(aldwell)" T41 $100 1862 PF-11 Cr. 319A.
A $100 issued by G(eorge) W. C(aldwell) on January 1, 1863 is in this lot. Caldwell was a captain and an assistant quartermaster. We know that he served at Jackson, Mississippi and Monroe, Louisiana. This is only the second note that we have auctioned that was issued by Caldwell and the very first for us where he used red ink for his penned issuance statement. In fact due to him using only his initials when issuing notes, Captain Caldwell remained unidentified until 2012. We offer tonight a charming high grade T41 that is fully framed with nice margins all the way around. We also see ideal inks on the face and prominent embossing on the back. Overall, this is a well preserved and historical note grading PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
