    T38 $2 1861 Cr. 286.
A popular Confederate type that is among the most interesting. Although this initially appears like a June 2, 1862 series $2 note, the first for the Confederacy, it is not. In Richmond, Blanton Duncan, thinking it was part of the 1861 enactment, engraved the September 2, 1861 date on the initial plate and printed approximately 36,000 notes on a ten-subject plate before creating new plates with the proper date. A distinctive issue not often seen in high grades. These early notes were needed for small change and circulated heavily. The central vignette represents the Confederacy attempting to vanquish the Union, using the Virginia State seal motif. The oval vignette in the upper left corner shows Judah P. Benjamin, the former U.S. Senator who later became a member of Jefferson Davis's cabinet. This is Benjamin's first appearance on Confederate currency. Confederate dealer Kent Robertson sold this to Mr. Hilton for $1500 in January, 2000. PCGS grades this example Apparent Very Fine 20, with minor restorations.
