Description

T34 $5 1861 PF-10 Cr. 268 PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
Keatinge & Ball produced this T34 which was dated September 2, 1861. Examples of the type were emitted from May 12 through December 8, 1862. This lovely piece features a portrait of Christopher Gustavus Memminger, the Confederacy's first Secretary of the Treasury, at center and a depiction of Minerva leaning on a pillar and holding her spear at right. Similar to many Confederate notes being offered in this auction, this piece is a conditional rarity. While the type itself is obtainable, CU examples are tightly held and thus difficult to acquire. Razor sharp corners, a nearly full frame, and completely original paper watermarked "CSA" in script letters are all attributes which characterize this lovely piece. We have not auctioned a PMG 64 EPQ certified T34 since January 2024, when an example realized $3,840.
