    T23 $10 1861 Cr. 154.
This T23 $10 faces up as a very bold type note. Both the T23 $10 and T32 $5 notes from this 1861 enactment are fascinating. Leggett, Keatinge & Ball, Richmond Va. received plates from the Mechanics Savings Bank, Savannah, Georgia, originally engraved by Bald, Adams & Co., New-York/Bald, Cousland & Co. of Philadelphia to re-engrave and adapt for these attractive and rare types. Printed on red fiber paper, this is a pleasing, lightly cancelled note with vibrant color. The vignette and counter structure are the same as on the Savannah plate with updated Confederate titles, obligations, and imprint. In the vignette at top center, two horses, with heads down and wearing blinders, pull a wagon through the town. The driver is seated upon a bale of cotton. A portrait of the Savannah's bank president, John Elliott Ward, is in the oval at lower left; at lower right, a farmer carries stalks of grain as a child crawls around behind him. An updated vermillion protector plate was created for the note with TEN across the bottom center and "X" counters flanking the vignette. This is the "A1" position, but on red fiber paper. Mr. Hilton purchased this note from Hugh Shull in 1999 for $1000. PCGS grades this cut-cancelled (2) note Very Fine 30PPQ. The note exhibits bright surfaces, unoxidized protectors, and strong pen signatures.
