    T20 $20 1861 PF-3 Cr. 140.
A PMG Choice Very Fine 35 First Series example with extraordinary 5mm wide top and bottom margins. This is unusual, in that T20s were printed extremely close together on a sheet. Many thought that this example and a couple of others that are similar were counterfeits. However, the dean of Confederate counterfeits, George B. Tremmel, has pronounced it genuine. Mr. Tremmel also pointed out that the margin size indicates that this note was printed in Columbia, utilizing different printing plates than those used in Richmond. Uncut T20 sheets printed in Richmond exist, but no uncut sheets of T20s printed in Columbia are known. The Thian Register also provides an important clue. We see on page 17 of the Quarterman reprint that there is an interesting entry. It is titled "$20-1 to 8" (1st Series - duplicates), and within it we see that serial numbers 801-1200 were signed by Bell and Walston. This Treasury pair signed the note in this lot, and it has serial number 1094-3. It is a great note and certainly worthy of serious consideration.
