    Vividly Colored Manouvrier $5

    T12 $5 1861 Cr. 48 PCGS Choice About New 58.
In an attempt to get more bank note volume when it became evident that the Southern Bank Note Company (the New Orleans branch of the American Bank Note Co.) could not possibly keep up with demand, Secretary Memminger gave a contract to lithograph $5 and $10 notes to Jules Manouvrier, a New Orleans lithographer. While the notes were acceptable, Manouvrier's shipping capabilities were not. A shipment of $5s and $10s was rifled enroute to Richmond after flimsy packaging broke open exposing the contents. Enough $10 notes were stolen to cause the Department of Treasury to withdraw them from use. The $5s were used because of the very low number of impressions stolen. A total of 15,556 $5s were issued, with the design being somewhat unique at the time. First, the face design had no vignettes, and second, the note did have a back design. Back designs were slowly adopted on other designs later in 1861 and 1862. The note is popular and is becoming increasingly difficult to locate in nice condition. The note is printed on bright paper with a strong blue back design and is free of any cancellations. A premium condition note that will enhance any collection to which it is added.
