Description

Fully Original with Bold Overprint Type 31 $5

Red serial number T31 $5 1861 PF-1 Cr. 244 PCGS Very Fine 25PPQ.
Printed by Southern Bank Note Company (actually the New Orleans branch of the ABNCo), this intaglio engraved note utilized pre-war vintage vignettes and had two orange 5 protectors as well as an orange FIVE protector panel. 58,860 notes were issued between November 13, 1861 and May 15, 1862 before production was terminated with the fall of New Orleans at the end of April 1862. Perhaps this note's most important characteristic is that its serial numbers are written in red ink. For some unknown reason, only notes with serial numbers between 16901 and 18200 received this color, with Shull estimating a surviving population of around 21-50 examples.
