Compound Interest notes were issued to help finance the Civil War and were redeemed for their face value, plus accrued interest after being held for three years. To aid in their identification each received a bronze surcharge stating that it was a COMPOUND INTEREST / TREASURY NOTE / 10. The bronze surcharge on this very rare note has just started to oxidize a bit and PCGS notes edge and internal splits, some erosion at the bronzing, and repairs.
