Rare £5 November 7, 1769 Virginia Note
Virginia November 7, 1769 £5 PCGS Apparent About New 50.A beautifully printed note and yet another Virginia rarity being presented in this sale. This lovely example is well margined and displays the bold signatures of Peyton Randolph and John Blair, Jr., the only two signers of this issue, along with serial number 176. There were only four denominations authorized for this issue, with this an example of the highest denomination. Newman indicates there were known counterfeits for this denomination. The notes for this issue were printed by William Rind, as indicated by the "W. RIND" under the nicely designed Colony Arms, from cast cuts and type. Rind apprenticed with Jonas Green of Annapolis and may have been his partner for a brief time. Rind died on August 19, 1773 and his wife Clemintina took over the business, including the publication of the Gazette, until her death in 1775. A partial watermark is observed on this example. PCGS cited tape repaired center splits and a repair at the lower right corner as the reasons for the apparent grade. No auction records are listed in the Newman reference for any of the denominations from this issue, nor are any values listed in the Friedberg book.
