Extremely Rare £5 April 5, 1759 Virginia Note
Virginia April 5, 1759 £5 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 35.Prior to this example, we had only handled one note from this issue, a five shillings note in VG with the back covered more than 50% by archival tape that sold over five years ago for $1,840. This example is considerably nicer, both in grade and appearance. The £5 notes were the highest of the nine denominations authorized for this issue. This example far surpasses the appearance of the £5 plate note in the Newman reference that displays paper loss at all four corners. That piece sold at auction in May 2004 and realized $2800. This example bears the signatures of Peyton Randolph and Robert Carter Nicholas. Serial number 1775 is seen on this note that was one of 2,000 printed. A few endorsements are viewed on the back, including one that reads, "Andrew Crawford of Plymouth." When this piece last appeared at auction, back in November 2008, it realized $3737.50. Given the increased awareness and appreciation of extreme rarities in recent years, we would expect this exceptional note to realize as much, if not more. PCGS cited repaired edge splits and tears as the reasons for the apparent grade. An extremely rare note in a condition that should attract considerable bidder interest, as the few surviving examples from this issue are generally much lower grade and have considerably less visual appeal.
