Virginia July 11, 1771 £5 Contemporary Counterfeit PMG Very Fine 20 Net.
PMG has graded only this example, and no genuines. PCGS has not graded any example, either genuine or counterfeit. The note itself is lovely, with broad, even margins and great eye appeal. The word tobacco which appears on the face of the note refers, according to Newman, "To the fact that the issue was to pay for tobacco lost by floods." In 1730 Virginia began to use public warehouses to store tobacco, and it was due to the loss in floods that the colony issued these notes to offset its losses. The only other example we know of was another counterfeit VF auctioned in 2005 for $2300. PMG has assigned the net grade for pieces added, referring to two of the four corners.
