Description

    Spectacular High-denomination Vermont Colonial

Vermont February 1781 40s Choice Very Fine. This is by far the finest Vermont note that CAA has handled. It's fully intact, perfectly printed, well margined and well signed. Were it not for minor splits at the edge of the centerfold and a few meaningless edge nicks in the margin area outside the design, the note would grade fully Extremely Fine, an unheard-of grade for this Colony. All Vermont notes are very rare, and most known examples are in extremely low grade. The majority of the known pieces have been pieced together from several different notes, often of different denominations. This note is considerably superior to the piece we sold in September of 2001 for $12,650. Vermonts are unpriced in Newman above the Very Good grade. They are printed on thin, weak paper that quickly disintegrated in circulation. Their scarcity is due to the fact that only a single issue was emitted, and that issue, authorized in February of 1781, had its legal-tender status revoked after a little more than a year in circulation. The scarcity was increased by the fact that these notes retain their validity for tax payments, but the Treasury was denied the right to re-issue the bills, and they were burnt when received as taxes. The note is free of restoration, it's sharply printed, and it has tremendous eye appeal. As an added bonus, this 40s denomination is the second scarcest of the eight denominations. It's the first 40s that this cataloger has ever handled in 40 years of dealing in Colonial Currency. A spectacular piece, fit for the very finest collection.
