    Description

    Excessively Rare High Grade Vermont

Vermont February, 1781 1s Very Fine. All Vermont notes are very rare, and most known examples are extremely low grade, many having been pieced together from fragments of several different notes. This is the first Vermont Colonial that CAA has been privileged to offer, and it's the second finest example that this cataloger has seen in forty years as a dealer. Unpriced in Newman above Very Good, Vermont notes were printed on thin, weak paper that quickly disintegrated in circulation. Their scarcity is due to the fact that only a single issue was emitted, and that issue, authorized in February of 1781, had its legal-tender status revoked after a little more than a year in circulation. The scarcity was added-to further by the fact that these retained their validity for tax payments, but the Treasury was denied the right to reissue the bills, and they were burnt when received as taxes. The presently offered piece grades fully Very Fine with some claims to Extra Fine. It has a water stain showing on both face and back, but it is whole, very well margined and well printed. It's free of restoration but for some well done strengthening of a horizontal center fold that had begun to split at the sides. It's one of the finest known examples of the colony to exist, and it is very likely that this piece will now reach or exceed . . . Est. 15,000up
