State of North Carolina Army Certificate January 1, 1782 - Warrentown, NC - Anderson 14 - PCGS Very Fine 35.
Listed as High R7 in Anderson. All North Carolina fiscal material from the Continental period is rare, with this piece being no exception. Essentially these were IOUs from the state promising back pay due to Revolutionary War soldiers. In 1790 the Federal Government assumed the debts of most of the states and many soldiers received at least partial back pay. According to Anderson, "Because of irregularities attending this issue, these certificates were excluded from the Federal assumption plan in 1790." A simplification of that statement would read, "Tough luck." This piece received the italic grade due to, "Repairs; LR Corner Replaced." A PCGS 40 example sold for $2,585 in our January 2015 FUN auction.
