South Carolina March 6, 1776 £100 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20.
This is only the second example that we have been able to offer of these notes, with the last in January 2004. This example faces up better than that note. Although PCGS does not provide a population report for Colonial notes, the PMG records indicate that they have only graded one example and that piece was Very Good 10. The emblem on this denomination includes a circular floral motif with thirteen hearts. The motto is "QUIS SEPARABIT, " which translates as who will separate. Only 2000 of these notes were printed by Peter Timothy. The £50 and £100 notes had printed backs, however a contemporary backing was applied to this piece, completely covering the back design. A few contemporary notations are observed on the backing. Although the signatures have faded somewhat, it can be discerned that the signers of this piece were Jacob Motte, Alexander Moultrie, and Thomas Waring. PCGS assigned the apparent grade to this note due to splits, repairs, and the backing. The Newman reference lists a value of $4000 for these notes in VG.

    Estimate: $3,000 - up.
