    Description

South Carolina June 1, 1775 £20 PCGS Apparent Very Good 10. The Provincial Congress authorized £1,000,000 in engraved certificates. The clasped hands emblem on the £20 examples includes the motto FIDES PUBLICA (public trust). 10,000 of these notes were printed. Only two denominations have decorative backs- the £20 and the £50. Those backs were engraved by James Oliphant and they contained the motto "FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD." The certificates were printed on weak thin paper. Each note required six signatures. PCGS mentioned splits, tape repairs, and paper peels.
