    Description

South Carolina February 8, 1779 $70 PCGS Extremely Fine 40.
Newman prices this $70 Coram note at $2000 in XF. Neither grading service has seen an uncirculated example for this denomination. In this year's FUN auction, we sold a PCGS 40 Apparent for $940. The back design, engraved by Thomas Coram of Charleston, bears a detailed vignette illustrating the myth of Prometheus, chained to a rock, having his liver perpetually devoured by an eagle. This is one of the three denominations where Coram added his name to the plate. It appears just to the left of the chain on Prometheus ankle.
