    Description

    February 8, 1779 $50 Striking Uncut Pair

South Carolina February 8, 1779 $50 Uncut Pair PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ.
A rare uncut pair on this denomination from the 1779 issue as it is only the second example that we have been able to offer. Both notes have their full complement of three bold signatures and both have been serial numbered, 4708 and 4713. These striking notes are positioned in such a manner that both a face and a back are on one side of the paper. When the plates for this issue were prepared, Thomas Coram of Charleston engraved both the faces and the elaborate backs, but he did not sign his work. When $50, $70, and $90 denominations were added later in the year, Coram engraved his name on the back of those three denominations. This $50 note bears the "T. Coram Sculp. 1779" in the ground below the knee of the mythical Atlas.
