Description

South Carolina February 8, 1779 $50 Uncut Pair PCGS Apparent About New 50.
An extremely rare pair of February 8, 1779 South Carolina notes. The entire edge of the two-subject plate has deeply impressed itself into the paper and is clearly visible. The Apparent grade is for stains, edge splits in the margins, and minor rust stains. The stains are present on both sides throughout the sheet, but they are not very dark, the edge splits are along the central fold between the two notes, and the rust is a small area of brown glue. When the plates for this issue were prepared, Thomas Coram of Charleston engraved both the faces and the elaborate backs, but he did not sign his work. When $50, $70, and $90 denominations were added later in the year, Coram engraved his name on the back of those three denominations. This $50 denomination bears the "T. Coram Sculp. 1779" in the ground below the knee of the mythical Atlas. The notes are printed so that you can see one face and one back on each side.

    Estimate: $2,500 - up.
