South Carolina February 8, 1779 $50 Complete Sheet of Two PCGS Apparent About New 50.
Uncut pairs of this denomination from the 1779 issue are quite rare in any grade as we have seen very few offered over the years. Both notes have enormous margins and are fully signed and numbered 6626 and 6635. PCGS has noted there are stains, edge splits in the margins and minor rust stains. The two notes on this sheet are positioned in such a manner that both a face and a back are on one side of paper. When the plates were prepared, Thomas Coram of Charleston engraved both the faces and the elaborate backs, but he did not sign his work. When the $50, $70, and $90 denominations were added later in the year, coram engraved his name on the back of those three denominations. This $50 note bears the "T. Coram Sculp. 1779" in the ground below the knee of the mythical Atlas. We have never sold an individual CU $50 note from this issue but, despite their problems, it appears that this would trim into two broadly margined CU notes. We have sold a PCGS Choice New 63PPQ pair for $5,750 and a PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ pair for $7,637.50. This pair won't perform up to that standard but it will probably realize about half.

    Estimate: $3,000 - up.
