A Very Rare High Grade South Carolina April-May 1775 Promissory NoteSouth Carolina April-May 1775 Promissory Note £50 PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 40.
The first example we have handled of either of the two denominations from this very rare issue. Both grading services and the Friedberg Book number this note differently. Friedberg calls it South Carolina 972, PCGS calls it 97.2 to force it into the right location in their system, and PMG calls it 97b for the same reason. Should we be lucky enough to get this in with Colonial Currency, it will create a lot of interest, as the opportunity to obtain either denomination from this issue is nearly impossible. The top signer of the four on this note is Henry Middleton, whose plantation outside of Charleston, Middleton Place, has been restored and is open to the public. The note has been pen cancelled, and PCGS mentions minor restorations and mounting remnants on the back, both of which are scarcely worthy of mention. A rare and important note.
