South Carolina April-May, 1775 £50 Private Promissory Note PMG Very Fine 20, pen cancelled.
The largest denomination of only two for this issue is offered in this lot, with both denominations being in this auction session. This example is in a comment free holder save for the pen cancelled statement. The notes of this issue have handwritten dates from April 18 to May 23, 1775. One of the signatures on this £50 note is of Henry Middleton. He was the second presiding officer of the Continental Congress from October 22 to October 26, 1774. He left the Continental Congress before independence was declared and next served in the South Carolina state government. He was later captured by the British in 1780 and died after the war in 1784, leaving behind this nice mid-grade example of an elusive note for the collectors of today to enjoy.
