South Carolina December 23, 1776 $5 Printed Foldover Error PCGS Very Fine 35.
These notes feature a horse vignette surrounded by the Latin motto DOMINUM GENEROSA RECUSAT, which Newman translates as, "The well born refuses a master." This issue was printed with wood cut emblems and borders by Peter Timothy in Charles-Town. Various ornaments, as well as Hebrew and Greek letters, appear on the backs. These notes are relatively common as partially signed Remainders, but higher grade fully signed and issued notes like this one are very hard to find. Newman values the note at $1000 in EF. This example is
numbered 2633 of 5000 printed. It is a very nice note in its own right, but considerable value is added by the printed foldover in the upper right corner. This "butterfly" error is almost unheard of in Colonial currency, where every sheet was hand-fed into the press. There is a blank area at the upper right of the face where the paper was folded over and the corresponding face imprint appears on the back. We cannot recall another on a Colonial note.
