    Description

South Carolina December 23, 1776 $1 PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ. This remainder is quite attractive and earned the EPQ designation from PMG. The face is nicely margined and includes an emblem of a tree with the motto PER ARDUA SURGO (I rise through adversity). Only 13,000 of these notes were printed. Printed by Peter Timothy, the m in his name is inverted on this denomination. Peter's father Lewis worked in Franklin's printing house for a time. Peter went into business himself in 1740. He was in Charleston during the siege and was taken prisoner by the British when the city was surrendered in 1780 and was sent to St. Augustine. The next year he was exchanged. He perished in a shipwreck while on his way to Antigua where one of his daughters owned property.
