South Carolina April 20, 1775 £50 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30.
The first example we've handled of these 1775 April-May Promissory Notes. Few have ever surfaced. Two examples sold in May 2004, a £20 and a £50, both right around this grade, realized just below and just above $2000 respectively. This £50 note is a full VF with the apparent grade assigned for ink erosion and repairs. The ink erosion is not serious and only becomes visible when the note is candled. The repairs are extremely minor, consisting of reinforcement of juncture holes at the center of the note. Extraordinarily rare and likely one of less than five in existence for this denomination.
