    Description

Very Rare William Ellery Signed March 18, 1776 Rhode Island

Rhode Island March 18, 1776 40s PCGS Very Fine 30.
This rare series of Rhode Island notes is usually encountered in damaged, lower grades. The issue is noteworthy for having some notes signed by William Ellery, Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Ellery "Signer" notes are quite rare and they were in very few collections until the four Boyd Rhode Island notes were sold in Ford Part XV. Those were among the finest known. However, this is problem free with excellent paper body. The signature is light, but it is clearly William Ellery. Rare and important signature aside, this is a meaningful rarity. It is the only Rhode Island March 18, 1776 40s to be graded by either service. And there is only one piece graded at both services combined higher than this for the entire issue. In our 2012 Central States Auction, we had a three Shilling Ellery signed note from this issue, which realized $2530 in a PCGS 20 Apparent holder.
