    Description

Rhode Island July 2, 1780 $4 PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ. This is an appealing, beautifully printed, nicely margined, fully-signed example. These notes were payable in Spanish Milled Dollars. Hall and Sellers printed this issue on watermarked paper with CONFEDE on one line and RATION below. The face is printed in black ink while the back is printed in both red and black ink. Former British counterfeiter Henry Dawkins engraved the face border cuts as well as the back cuts surrounding the emblems. The emblems and mottos were also used for the Jan. 14, 1779 issue of Continental Currency. This $4 includes an emblem with a wild boar that is charging into a spear with the motto AUT MORS AUT VITA DECORA (either death or an honorable life). Metcalfe Bowler and Thomas Rumreill signed this example and the guaranty was signed by Jonathan Arnold.
