Historic and High Grade 1740 Rhode Island Counterfeit

Rhode Island December 2, 1740 20s Contemporary Counterfeit PMG About Uncirculated 55. Previously lot 568 from the Stack's May 11, 2004 sale of the Ford Collection. The Stack's cataloger (and this cataloger) consider the note a counterfeit, as does Newman where this very note is the plate note labeled as a counterfeit. The PMG holder makes reference to the Ford sale, but does not label this note a counterfeit. Very early notes are often open for discussion as to genuineness, but in this instance, there seems to be no room for doubt. The carefully researched Stack's catalog lays the case out very clearly and points out the interesting aside that the passer of this bill (as noted in pen notation on its back) was the brother-in-law of John Potter, one of the authorized signers whose forged signature appears on the face of the note. The good news is that these early counterfeits trade on the market in lock-step with the genuines. At the Stack's sale over six years ago, this note realized $9200. It's a beautiful and extraordinarily historic piece that should realize considerably more this evening.

    Estimate: $15,000 - up.
