    Description

Rhode Island May 22, 1777 $1/36 PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ.
The highest graded of the mere two examples that PMG has handled, this note is sure to capture the attention of bidders. The other example received a grade 25 points lower. This was the lowest denomination for this issue that was authorized in an attempt to relieve the shortage of small change in circulation. The signature of Theodore Foster remains bold and embossing remains visible through the holder. Foster (1752-1828) was one of the first two United States Senators from Rhode Island. He also helped found the Rhode Island Historical Society and was a trustee of Brown University. The town of Foster, RI was named for him. Some sources have credited him with a role in the attack on the Gaspee in 1775, but others dispute his involvement. This $1/36 note is attractive and desirable.
