    Description

Extremely Rare William Ellery Signed Note

Rhode Island March 18, 1776 40s William Ellery PCGS Very Fine 30.
This rare series of Rhode Island notes is usually encountered in damaged, lower grades. The issue is noteworthy for having some notes signed by William Ellery, a
Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Ellery "Signer" notes are quite rare and they were in very few collections until the four Boyd Rhode Island notes were sold in Ford Part XV. Those were among the finest known. However, this is problem free with excellent paper body. The signature is light, but it is clearly William Ellery. We have sold only three Ellery signed notes. The closest in grade to this piece was a PCGS 20 Apparent which we auctioned at Central States of 2012 for $2530. Ellery graduated from Harvard in 1747. His signature on the Declaration of Independence was the second largest behind only John Hancock.
