Raleigh, NC- Trustees of Raleigh Academy 10¢ Oct. 1809
The Raleigh Academy was established with state aid in 1801 as the Raleigh Academy for Boys and Girls. After a building was finished in 1803, the school continued on until 1828 when, beset by financial woes and intensified competition, it closed. We have actually sold another example of this note some fifteen years ago when a similar condition piece crossed the auction block for $4312. This example, which appears to have been severed or nearly so and then restored, grades PCGS Very Fine 20 with the restorations noted. The note faces up exceptionally well and should test the previous price level.
