Description

    Pennsylvania Middle-Ferry on Schuylkill January 18, 1777 3d PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
An appealing remainder from Joseph Ogden, the operator of the Middle Ferry, who issued these notes as a means of making change while collecting fares. During the Revolutionary War, Ogden was sent to Walnut Street Prison in Philadelphia by the British for impeding them at the ferry. According to Charles Burr Ogden's 1898 book, The Quaker Ogdens in America, "Fractional currency issued by Joseph Ogden in paper form was freely taken by storekeepers and teamsters as far west as Pittsburg, PA. All issues were redeemed in cash after the close of the war." This example is a perfect gem that looks as superb as any we have seen. We just sold a PCGS Very Choice New 64 (sans PPQ) for $329.
