DescriptionPennsylvania January 18, 1777 4d Joseph Ogden Issue PMG Superb Gem Unc 67 EPQ.
A beautiful note that is essentially perfect in every way and this is only the second "67" we have ever sold. Joseph Ogden, the operator of the Middle Ferry, issued these notes as a means of making change while collecting fares. During the Revolutionary War, Ogden was sent to Walnut Street Prison in Philadelphia by the British for impeding them at the ferry. According to Charles Burr Ogden's 1898 book, The Quaker Ogdens in America, "fractional currency issued by Joseph Ogden in paper form was freely taken by storekeepers and teamsters as far west as Pittsburg, Pa. All issues were redeemed in cash after the close of the war." Ogden was born in Chester County, PA in 1725 and died on Jan. 18, 1805 at the age of 81.
