Beautiful Ben Franklin Printed August 10, 1739 Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania August 10, 1739 15s Very Fine. This is the first example of this issue that we have had to offer in any of our sales, and in fact, it's the first example of this issue that this cataloger can recall handling in 40 years of dealing with Colonial Currency. The piece is solid for the grade, without a hint of a problem or restoration of any kind. The nature print is distinct, as is every word of the text, and all three signatures. Most Colonial collectors have never had the opportunity to examine a note from this issue, and it's a pleasure that when one finally does appear, it's a solid, problem-free piece with a very nice overall appearance. This is the first issue from Pennsylvania that has the format and general appearance of the notes we are used to seeing. It is also the issue where Ben Franklin introduced deliberate misspellings of Pennsylvania on different denominations as a device to prevent raised-denomination notes. The "Printed by B. Franklin" imprint is strong and clear immediately beneath the sharp nature print. We would not be at all surprised to see this irreplaceable early note reach into the mid four-figure level.
