Pennsylvania April 10, 1777 8s Altered to £8 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20.
At a glance and even at a hard second look, our eye tells us we are looking at a red and black £8 note from the April 10th, 1777 Pennsylvania issue. There would be nothing strange about that, except that the highest denomination of the 12 from this issue is £4. What we really have here is an 8s note very skillfully raised by hand to £8. It was clearly done contemporarily to the issue for the purpose of defrauding the recipient. We have seen a few other raised Colonials, but they are generally on rare types which has accounted for their survival. We have never seen one raised to a denomination that did not exist for the issue. We have also never seen a raised Colonial from Pennsylvania. PCGS has assigned the Apparent grade for "Splits, Tears, and Minor Damage." They have also accurately detected the attempted fraud and commented "8s Note Contemporaneously Raised to 8 Pounds." An item where an estimate is an extreme challenge...never fearing a challenge, we will guess...
