    Description

    Pennsylvania July 20, 1775 20s PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
A well signed, beautifully printed 20 shillings piece of "Resolve Money" with wide margins; this lovely example earned the Premium Paper Quality designation from PCGS. This is the plate letter B variety. Plate letter A examples have capital letters on the right column whereas the plate letter B notes have capital letters on the left column. These notes were issued in reaction to the Battle of Lexington. As stated by Henry Phillips, "the mere issuing of these bills was an act of rebellion, as they were emitted by the mere resolve of the assembly in defiance of their charter, and without reference to the governor." However, the notes still included the text, "His Majesty, King George the Third." We have not sold a Gem of this 20s denomination before, but have sold another note from this issue in this grade. It realized $1,552 in the 2010 FUN auction.
