Rare North Carolina 1729 Handwritten Counterfeit Bill
North Carolina November 27, 1729 3 Pounds Handwritten Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. NC-33. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. This handwritten note with penned indent design drawing at the top is from a rare and unusual indented Bills of Credit series. The hand accomplishment used to create the obligation across the top made the issue prone to fraudulent notes. However, even these contemporary counterfeits are rare today. This is the Newman plate note illustrated on page 315 of the 5th edition. It is especially broad and large. The paper seal is affixed with wax at lower left. Strongly penned throughout. One of the higher-grade notes from the entire series we have encountered. Noted with "Repaired Splits; Minor Ink Erosion." An ideal and early type note from this fascinating series.

A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
