    Rare 1729 Handwritten Bill

    North Carolina November 27, 1729 3 Pounds Handwritten Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. NC-33 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30.
    This handwritten note with penned indenting design drawing at the top is from a rare and unusual indented Bills of Credit series. The hand accomplishment used to create the obligation across the top made the issue prone to fraudulent notes. Genuine notes from the issue are exceedingly rare. So rare in fact, that we auctioned a genuine 5 pounds from the Newman Collection for $38,400 in November 2017. That handily eclipsed its high estimate at the time. However, even these contemporary counterfeits are rare today. The paper seal is affixed with wax at lower center-left. There is a penned endorsement on the back. Bright, and one of only four PCGS has certified. One of the higher-grade notes from the entire series we have encountered. Noted with "Restorations; Text and Signatures Redrawn." Ex: our 2015 Long Beach sale, lot 18222 where it realized $1,762.50. This bill faces up well, is broad size, and keenly represents this uniquely styled series.
