    Description

North Carolina May 28, 1757 £5 per Cent PCGS Fine 12.
The entire May 28, 1757 issue is unpriced in Newman. Each of the four different denominations has two varieties. This is the one claiming interest at 6 per Cent rather than 6 per Centum. The notes were printed by James Davis and signed by Thomas Barker and John Starkey and their signatures remain clearly visible. The act authorizing these notes was passed at Newbern, a town that was made a colonial capital by Governor William Tryon. This issue is the earliest appearance of a town name on North Carolina notes. The town was was first settled by Baron Christopher de Graffenried from Bern, Switzerland, hence the town name. The italic grade was assigned due to splits, tears, damage and repairs, and pieces replaced.
