    Genuine May 17, 1783 20 Shillings Crown

North Carolina May 17, 1783 20 Shillings Crown and Book Fr. NC-206 PMG Choice Fine 15 Net.
Another extremely rare genuine May 17, 1783, note. An interesting crown and book vignette is at the lower left of this rarity. At initial inspection, the light printing and printing definition make this appear to be a contemporary counterfeit. However, it has the proper diagnostic observed on genuine notes. In the first large type "Twenty" at the upper left, the top of the "y" is even with the crossbar of the adjacent "t." This is a genuine note, and significant as such. It is the Newman Collection note, though it received much paper augmentation after its sale. Noted as "Repaired & Reconstructed" by PMG. Ex: our 2016 Long Beach sale, lot 18081 where it realized $2,350; our Newman Part VI sale, April 2015, lot 19527. The presents very nicely and is seldom offered.
