North Carolina May 10, 1780 $400 Mutare Vel Timere Sperno PCGS Choice About New 58.Extraordinary grade for the issue. We have sold well over 100 examples of notes from this issue, but have never before handled a $400 in any grade. Neither Newman nor Friedberg indicates this to be a particularly scarce denomination although clearly something is afoot here. The note itself is a real honey grading right at the cusp of fully uncirculated with strong signatures, excellent margins, and a wonderful overall appearance. The 58 grade is italicized for minor restorations. There is only one and it is very minor. PMG has not graded any examples of this note and PCGS has graded three notes, all apparents. This is almost certainly the finest of the group.
