DescriptionNorth Carolina December, 1771 £3 PMG Choice Very Fine 35 Net.
Only 3000 of these notes were printed. Colonel Joseph Montfort's signature is seen on the back along with many other endorsements as is common for North Carolina notes. Montfort was elected Treasurer of the Northern District of North Carolina in 1764 and he held that position until 1775. Montfort was born in England in 1724 and he died at Halifax, North Carolina on March 25, 1776. Masons will be interested to learn that Montfort was the Provincial Grand Master in the American Colonies. He was "the highest Masonic official ever reigning on this continent" according to his gravestone. The net grade is for annotations (which is common on North Carolina notes) and a split repair, which is minor.
