North Carolina December, 1771 1s Very Good. This note split into pieces and was sewn with thread onto a plain backing. A basket of fruit is the emblem. Although the other signatures have faded, the signature of John Harvey remains bold. Harvey was born about 1725. He began serving in the Assembly on June 13, 1746 and was elected Speaker in January 1773. He was instrumental in the effort to have a post road built through the eastern portion of North Carolina. A resident of Perquimans County, Harvey was outspoken in his opposition to the taxes levied against the Colonies by the British. He served as moderator of the Provincial Congress from 1774-1775. Harvey died in mid 1775 as the result of injuries sustained in a fall from a horse.
